Kentucky Natural Gaited Horse Association

Newsletter

January - December 2005

Introduction:

Howdy Members! Another year has came and gone for KNGHA. We have made great strides in our organization in 2005 and hope to continue to effectively work toward the natural gaited horse being recognized as a breed. We have seen several of our established goals successfully being met this year. Our natural gaited horses are receiving recognition at a state level and hopefully soon at a national level, in the show ring.

Our newsletter will be on a different schedule this year; publications will be March, June, September, and December, with members receiving a newsletter via mail, and also posted on our website. We are open to new ideas and items that you would like to see in our publication, so if you have any ideas please e-mail threebarnsfarm@yahoo.com

We want this to be an exciting year and we need all the help that we can get. Criteria at this point will be information from members, meetings, upcoming events, current events,

new members and registrations. We hope this is a year that members are well informed of our accomplishments, and create a closer bond in our organization.

Benefits of Membership:

Meetings:

During 2005 six Board of Directors meetings were held, all meetings were held at the home of Nelson and Judy Francis in Morgan Co. KY. Theses are always open meetings, so this is one way for the members to voice their ideas and concerns for the association. If you can’t attend the meetings, but have ideas for the association, either contact a Board Member or e-mail: francis_s@bellsouth.net

Several Board members met in February 2005 with Dr. Alan Emsley of Sygen, Dr. Gus Gothran of the U.K. Lab, and representatives from England for Equine Research. They discussed KNGHA and establishing a breed with Kentucky through scientific testing.

On December 27th 2005, KNGHA met with Dr. Kathryn Graves, who replaced Dr. Gus Gothran with U.K. Lab. The discussion was on research and development of DNA through scientific testing.

Current News:

The Gaited Horse Magazine, winter addition 2005, presented a cover story on the “Search for the Elusive Gaited Gene.”

Type in their web address: www.thegaitedhorse.com, and then click on cover story, you will be able to bring up the article. It features Al Capone, a foundation stallion registered KNGHA, owned by Francis Mountain Farm, and Brian Helson, who is a Board Member for KNGHA. Check it out; I am sure you will find that it is a very interesting article on the progress being made in finding the gaited gene.

KNGHA will be putting together a Drill Team, to perform during the Breed’s Demonstration, at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY. We don’t have the exact date yet, but we’re thinking it will be in August 2006. If anyone is interested, please contact Greg Burton at (606) 768-4131. There will be many practice sessions, so we need people that will be committed and willing, for approximately 3 months.

All Scheduled 2006 Board of Directors meetings will be held at 2:00 p.m. at Nelson and Judy Francis residence, on the following dates: Feb 4th, March 11th, May 7th, July 9th, Sept. 10th, and Nov. 11th. If anyone needs directions please call (606) 743-7173.

If anyone is interested in having professional quality pictures of your horses, farms, etc.

Stacey Blanton, a very talented photographer, is willing to come to your home to do this for you. Quality pictures are essential in advertising and promoting your horses. You may contact Stacey, for a complete list of pricing at: 399 West Maple St. Salyersville, KY 41465, phone numbers are (606) 349-2526 or  (606) 349-2365 or e-mail at blanton3@foothills.net.

REMINDER: There will be a Heritage Sale at the Tattersalls Sale Pavilion, in Lexington, KY on April 7th & 8th 2006. There will be an updated reminder and more information on the website closer to the date of sale.

Total Horses Registered:

Over 50 foals were registered during the 2005 Parent Proven Special, bringing our total number of horses to 756. If anyone has horses that need registering, contact any Board Member or an Inspector. Now would be a good time to register those 2005 foals. The association is already working on the fourth generation of breeding and we are now looking forward to seeing the fifth coming on soon.

2005 Events:

KNGHA participated in two Breed’s Demonstrations. The first was held at the Ohio Horse Park in Franklin Furnace, OH. The second was held at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY. The members that participated in theses events had a great time, while letting others see what Kentucky Natural Gaited Horses are all about.

Trail Rides:

We held two organized trail rides in 2005. The first was held on May 7th at Patoker Campgrounds in Morgan Co. KY. The weather was beautiful, which made the trails even better. After the ride was over, a soup bean dinner was served to well over 100 people. Everyone enjoyed the food and sitting around the campfires late into the night, talking with old friends and making new ones.

The second ride was held on October 15th & 16th at Rudy’s Ranch in Salt Lick, KY. The leaves were starting to turn, which made this a very scenic and enjoyable ride. Upon the rider’s return, a delicious chili dinner was served to all. An Auction followed the dinner, which was a big success. Everyone had a lot of fun, trying to outbid each other. On Saturday night the Show Committee had its first, Fun Show. Everyone worked together and had a lot of fun doing it. The weather did turn a bit cold, but no one seemed to mind, especially, the kids

Annual Fellowship Banquet:

The annual Fellowship Banquet was held on December 3rd at the Community Center in West Liberty, KY. We had a good turn out for this event, considering that there were several Christmas Dinners and other events being held on this same night. A potluck dinner was served, followed by the awards presentation for High Point winners, and a special recognition to Stephanie Francis. She is not only the Registrar; she also works very hard behind the scenes (writing the ads, corresponding, e-mailing, etc.). Everyone enjoyed getting together, talking about the association, our hopes and expectations for the new year, and just horse talking in general.

We did miss having Wayne & Inez Jenkins at the Banquet this year. Wayne’s father,

Ova Jenkins passed away. Wayne is a Trustee for KNGHA, and Ova was a lifelong friend to many members of the association. Our condolences go out the Jenkins family.
